چکیده

The animation of an ECA, for a large range of animation systems, implies that the behaviour of this ECA is encoded in a representation language giving a form of realization for speech, prosody, facial expressions, gaze, head and torso movements, gestures, and so on. Interested in gestures, some representation languages already exist that are suited for a particular application or domain, or even for the employed system for their animation. A recent effort of a group of researchers as part of a project called SAIBA [2] aims at defining a unified representation for each modality of the verbal and non verbal behaviours. For gestures, a physical description gives the necessary information for its production and reproduction, and for its synchronization with the other modalities.

Gestures of a virtual guide

This thesis describes a research project on the development of a virtual guide resulting in an Embodied Conversational Agent (ECA), which means it is capable of interacting with users through verbal and nonverbal communication. Since an ECA requires a lot of functionality, equal to the combined functionality of a dialogue system, a multimodal interface and a software agent [CSPC00], existing so...

Towards Facial Gestures Generation by Speech Signal Analysis Using HUGE Architecture

In our current work we concentrate on finding correlation between speech signal and occurrence of facial gestures. Motivation behind this work is computer-generated human correspondent, ECA. In order to have a believable human representative it is important for an ECA to implement facial gestures in addition to verbal and emotional displays. Information needed for generation of facial gestures ...

Mental Timeline in Persian Speakers’ Co-speech Gestures based on Lakoff and Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory

One of the introduced conceptual metaphors is the metaphor of "time as space". Time as an abstract concept is conceptualized by a concrete concept like space. This conceptualization of time is also reflected in co-speech gestures. In this research, we try to find out what dimension and direction the mental timeline has in co-speech gestures and under the influence of which one of the metaphoric...

Computational approach towards identification of pathogenic missense mutations in AMELX gene and their possible association with amelogenesis imperfecta

Amelogenin gene (AMEL-X) encodes an enamel protein called amelogenin, which plays a vital role in tooth development. Any mutations in this gene or the associated pathway lead to developmental abnormalities of the tooth. The present study aims to analyze functional missense mutations in AMEL-X genes and derive an association with amelogenesis imperfecta. The information on miss...

Facial Gestures: Taxonomy and Application of Non-Verbal, Non-Emotional Facial Displays for Embodied Conversational Agents

Facial displays are an extremely important communication channel fulfilling a wide variety of functions in discourse and conversation. Humans use them naturally, often subconsciously, and are therefore very sensitive to the application of such displays in their computer-generated correspondents, Embodied Conversational Agents (ECA). In this chapter, we aim to provide an extensive survey of one ...
